Bar and Bat Mitzvahs are the ultimate Jewish coming-of-age ceremony and celebration. Children who are born of a mother who is Jewish is considered to reach maturity at age 13 (for boys) or 12 (for girls.) The special coming-of-age occasion is called a Bar Mitzvah for boys and a Bat Mitzvah for girls. Not only do the Bar and Bat Mitzvahs represent the maturity of the boy or girl, but they also signify the new privileges and obligations the young teen must fulfill as described by the Torah. Many Jewish families around the world look forward to throwing large Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah celebrations for their children. The Jewish people consider this to be a very special time and use it as an opportunity to get the family together to celebrate their child's growing into adulthood.
